Positivity in Perspective: Top Conversations in Gaming & Entertainment from Q3 2021

Published On: January 12, 2022By Categories: InsightsTags:

In this third installment of our Positivity in Perspective series, we are taking a look back at the conversations that sparked the most joy during July, August, and September of 2021.

July

Relative to other months, the top topics in July sparked less joy. Indeed, of the 30 top conversations we assessed, only five enjoyed an overall sentiment score in the positive range, though the sixth and seventh came close. Given the overabundance of positive chatter the month prior surrounding major summer gaming announcements, this decline in sentiment was notable, albeit not too surprising.

Amid the gaming slump, entertainment news shone. Five of the seven top positive conversations on our list centered around television shows. Tied for the top spot this month with a sentiment of 95/100 are the teaser trailer for Season 2 of the The Witcher, a show that was born from a beloved gaming franchise, and the announcement of What If….?, Marvel’s first animated series.

Other entertainment focused top positive conversations included the release of all the Loki episodes on Disney + and the Fear Street: Part 1 release. See the scores and other highlights below.

Top Positive Conversations: July 2021
# Entity Conversation Topic Sentiment
1 The Witcher First Teaser Trailer for Season 2 95
2 What If…? Premiere of Marvel’s First Animated Series 95
3 Marvel Studios All episodes of Loki now streaming 70
4 Netflix Fear Street Part 1 Reviews 68
5 Valorant The Most Insane Skins on Valorant 64
6 Genshin Impact New Confirmed Characters 58
7 Loki Episode Recaps & Easter Eggs 57

August

Overall audience sentiment rebounded quite solidly in August! The top positive topics of the month enjoyed an average sentiment score of 91, ranging from an impressively high 98 to a solidly positive 83.

The most positive conversation this month was the release of Sonic Colors: Rise of Wisps part one, a two-part animated series promoting Sonic Colors, the celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog 30th anniversary as a TV show. David Dastmalchian as Polka Dot Man, and the cat he adopted during the filming of The Suicide Squad (see Bubblegum dressed up in a Polka Dot Cat outfit!), took second place.

The list also includes excitement around Manifest being saved by Netflix for a final season, the Hisui region of Pokémon Legends, the movement to free Marvel vs Capcom 2, a Roblox: Adopt Me! update, and more.

Top Positive Conversations: August 2021

5 Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Free MVC2 Campaign 91
6 Roblox: Adopt Me! Mythic Egg Update, New Mythical Pets 84
7 Cowboy Bebop Actor Reveal for Netflix Show 83

September

In our final summer month, we saw excitement around Mac Miller’s mix-tape album Faces being announced for streaming release (96/100) and Megan Thee Stallion’s collaboration with Nike (94/100).

September was a solid month for positive conversations related to Marvel. The next several spots were held by Spider-Man, Wolverine, Wandavision, and Loki. Fans were particularly excited about the announcement of the new Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine games from Insomnia, to be released exclusively on Playstation 5 in 2023. The news that Wandavision won three Emmy awards was also well received.

On brand with the “god of mischief” moniker, Tom Hiddleston as Loki was a constant source of buzz in September, as interviews and Disney features that sought to tell the “untold” tales of Loki inextricably blurred the lines between actor and character. If the “glorious purpose” of these well-timed content pieces and interviews were to delight fans, they succeeded: conversation sentiment around Loki was solidly positive at 77/100.
